Further Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF) Success

In the last two newsletters I announced that 3 ensembles had achieved success in the Victorian School Music Festival. Since then, four more ensembles have performed and achieved outstanding results.

Congratulations to our Senior Chamber Strings who were presented with a Gold Award. This is the first Gold Award that a string group has ever received at our college. The Intermediate Presto Strings also performed and received a Silver Award which is a great achievement. Both groups participated in an on-stage tutorial with the chief adjudicator following their performances and had the opportunity to hear other groups perform. Congratulations to Mr Tim O Connor, our Head of Strings for directing these ensembles.

Our Concert Band, directed by Mrs Melissa Knowles competed last Wednesday and won a Gold Award. This group of 63 students is the largest the college has ever sent to the Victorian School Music Festival and is a testament to the success of the program.

The MWSC Symphonic Band followed with a performance on Wednesday night. The ensemble performed to an excellent standard and won a Gold Award. The chief adjudicator, Albert Nguyen from the University of Memphis was extremely impressed with not only the group, but by the conducting style and skills of Mr Joseph Yu.

Overall, 7 groups involving 238 students travelled to VSMF competitions in the past month and we were awarded 6 Golds and 1 Silver which is the best result the school has ever achieved in this event.

My sincere thanks go to all of my instrumental music staff who volunteered their time (sometimes out of hours) to accompany our students to these events. Congratulations to all students involved!

Student Parent Teacher Conferences

A reminder that Semester Two Student Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday 12 September between 1pm and 7.30pm.  Conferences will once again be held online via Webex links.  Thursday 12 September is a student free day, and no classes will be held.  Please encourage your child/ren to attend these conferences with you, so that they can receive feedback and take ownership of their learning.

2024 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Invitations to the 2024 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey) link has been emailed out again this week via Compass. Each year the school conducts an opinion survey amongst a sample of our learning community. Results will be used to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement. The survey will be conducted online and should only take 20 minutes to complete. Please take the time to respond to this important survey as we value your feedback.

Message from Our Nurses

Just a friendly reminder on what the protocol is for when your child is feeling unwell and would like to go home. Should your child fall ill during the day they must attend the First Aid Office on their respective campus for care. The Nurse will then assess them and if they are deemed too unwell to be at school, you will be contacted by the Nurse to arrange for them to be collected. If your child is under 16 years of age they will need to be physically picked up and signed out from school, they are not to leave the school grounds without being picked up by an adult.

Students should not be using any form of electronic device (mobile, laptop etc.) to contact their own parents/carers to arrange to be collected. If this occurs, we request your support to direct them to the Nurse.

We would also ask for your cooperation in not sending your child to school if they are unwell. Please do not give them medication to reduce fever and symptoms of viral illness before school in the hope that they can ‘push through’ the day. This will assist us in reducing the spread of illness at school and help your child recover and to feel their best whilst learning.

Please also note that a medical certificate will be required if your child does not attend a scheduled VCE SAC.

Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated as we are trying to keep our learning community safe and stop the spread of Whooping Cough, Covid and other illnesses.

The David Burgess Foundation Scholarships

It is now over 30 years since The David Burgess Foundation was established in 1991. In this period, they have provided scholarships to nearly eighty extraordinary and well deserving disadvantaged students.

The Foundation was established in memory of the late David Burgess MBE, who made a major contribution to youth, education and the community in general. It has become well known throughout the Victorian education community for its longstanding and enduring commitment to worthy secondary school students in need.

The Foundation aims to assist young people from State Secondary Schools who have had to struggle to overcome adversity, who have shown commitment to their goals and those of the community, and who, with some help, can succeed in their studies and future life. To this end the Foundation makes annual awards to Year 12 students who gain entry to tertiary course at Victorian Universities and/or TAFE Institutes. Each award-winner receives $5,500 each year towards the cost of their course.

The Foundation aims to help these students make the transition from a supportive school environment to a tertiary educational setting. What makes them unique in this regard is the mentoring support that is provided alongside the financial assistance. The mentor system is a non-professional service, and their mentors provide friendly, concerned help and advice to award winners throughout the duration of their tertiary studies.

This is a comprehensive package of services for deserving students in our State Education System and is a fitting tribute to David Burgess, who was a strong advocate of State Schools.

Many of their children graduate this year, and therefore we will see the end of their excellent contribution to our community. We are looking for a new energetic team of volunteers to take over the uniform shop. If you are interested, and would like more information, please complete this survey. As we move closer to the end of Term 3 students have been busy both inside and outside the classroom.  Students have also started to make decisions and choices for what their next year will look like.

Parent Teacher Student interviews are scheduled for Thursday 12th September.  These conferences allow students and parents to talk to teachers about how they are progressing and what they can focus on to continue their learning growth next term.  They are a fantastic opportunity to enhance the collaboration that exists between students, teachers and parents.

The Japanese Study

The Japanese Study Tour is leaving on Saturday 7th September with a group of 20 students from Year 9 and 10 Japanese classes and 3 staff.  Students and staff will travel through Japan including visiting our sister school in Owa and sister city in Natori across 21 days.  This is fantastic learning opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Japan.  Thank you to Ms Michelle Lukaczynski and Ms Ayako Yasunaga for their planning and preparation of this tour.

Year 10 Gala

The Year 10 Gala was fantastic celebration for our Year 10 students.  Our students are excited to get dressed up in their best gear, take a million and one photos and dance the night away!  A number of staff will also attend the evening, which is great to see.  Thank you to Mr Liam Wall and our Year 10 Coordinators – Ms Juliz Mathew and Mr Adam Wheeler for making this great event happen!    We hope you have a wonderful night!

The term 3 holidays are fast approaching and our Unit 3 and 4 students are nearing the end of their school based assessment tasks for their studies. We are aware this can be a stressful time for students and encourage them to seek support from their Year Level Coordinators, Wellbeing Team, their peers and parents/carers. Habits that will support students at this time are; making sure they are getting quality sleep, sticking to a study schedule, using their support network and moving their body.

Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

Bookings for term 3 conferences opened on Thursday 29 August. These conferences provide a valuable avenue for feedback regarding your student’s progress this semester. It is a good opportunity to discuss suggested strategies moving forward, and for the teacher, parent and student to develop a shared understanding about how their learning growth can be supported moving forward.

2025 Subject Selections

Thank you to the Senior Subschool team for their support with catching up with year 11 students following the submission of their 2025 subjects selections. Year 11 students who had made a change to their 2024 subjects for next year were either spoken to or emailed regarding these changes to ensure they were making fully informed decisions, and were aware of the steps they would need to take to allow for success next year.

Year 11 Fancy Dress

Next Friday, 6 September, just over 200 Year 11s will enjoy a night in the Novotel Ballroom for the annual Year 11 Fancy Dress. We are looking forward to seeing some innovative and imaginative costumes, and getting into the spirit of the evening with the students. Thanks to Mr James Johnston for all the organisation leading up to this event.

English Trial Exam

On Wednesday 18 September, students studying Units 3 and 4 English will complete a trial exam. This is an opportunity for them to experience the full 3 hours of writing, and 15 minutes reading time required when completing the English exam. The exam will be marked by external assessors allowing students to receive valuable feedback on their progress. It is being conducted at this time to allow students to work through the feedback provided with their teacher upon their return from holidays.

The Age VCE Guide 2024

The Age releases a VCE Guide every year that contains information about exams, how students are managing stress, supporting your VCE student, exam marking and how the ATAR is calculated. A link to the guide can be found HERE. You will need to register with your email address to access the articles but they are free to access.

Student Voice Report – Evatt Model UN

Read Time: ( words)

Throughout August, students from the MWSC International Affairs Club (IAC) on the Senior Campus embarked on an exhilarating adventure at The Evatt Competition, a prestigious Model UN event organised by UN Youth Australia. This competition challenges teams of two to step into the shoes of United Nations Security Council member states, where we passionately debate resolutions that reflect their assigned country’s foreign policy interests.

The preliminary rounds took place at the esteemed Melbourne Law School and Suzanne Cory, where students tackled pressing global issues such as poaching, the humanitarian crisis in Haiti and single-use plastic. These debates were not mere academic exercises; we were transformative experiences that honed essential skills in diplomacy, teamwork, public speaking, and critical thinking. Participants were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, representing viewpoints that often diverged from Australia’s policies, thereby broadening their political horizons and fostering a deeper understanding of international relations.

The camaraderie among IAC members was palpable, as we celebrated their dedication and the countless hours spent in preparation during weekly meetings. For many, this was their inaugural foray into Model UN debates—a daunting yet exhilarating experience.

As young leaders, we navigated the complexities of global diplomacy, we not only refined our negotiation skills but also formed lasting connections with like-minded peers from various schools. The breaks between sessions provided a perfect opportunity for delegates to forge a bond that extended beyond the competition.

With such passionate and committed individuals stepping into international affairs, the future looks brighter than ever. The dedication displayed by IAC members serves as a promising sign that the world will be in capable hands for generations to come.

MWSC Sweeps VSMF with Gold!

Our music program continues to soar to new heights. Our talented students have once again proven their exceptional skills at the prestigious Victorian School Music Festival.

Last week, the Senior Chamber Strings and Presto Strings not only achieved Gold and Silver awards, respectively, but also had the invaluable opportunity to learn from the chief adjudicator and witness other top-tier ensembles. A special congratulations to Mr Tim O’Connor, Head of Strings, and our string ensembles for their outstanding achievements.

This week, we sent two more ensembles to VSMF.  Our Concert Band, led by Ms Melissa Knowles, made history as the largest ensemble our school has ever sent to the competition. This group of 63 dedicated students performed at an exceptional level, earning a well-deserved Gold award.

Following closely behind, the MWSC Symphonic Band also took the stage and delivered an extraordinary performance. Their dedication and skill were recognised with a Gold award, and the chief adjudicator, Mr Albert Nguyen from the University of Memphis, was particularly impressed by both the ensemble’s performance and Mr Joseph Yu’s (MWSC Head of Brass and Symphonic Band director) conducting style.

These two ensembles were the final two of seven MWSC groups to compete at VSMF this month. In total, we achieved an incredible six Golds and one Silver award, making this our most successful year at the competition. A total of 238 students had the opportunity to participate in VSMF, providing them with an unforgettable experience.

I extend my sincere gratitude to our music staff who generously volunteered their time to support and supervise our students, often going above and beyond their regular duties.

This session will outline a draft itinerary for the trip, as well as the audition process for the opportunity to get into one of these ensembles.

Eligible students will receive an invitation via Compass to the online information session.

Numeracy for Families

Read Time: ( words)

Welcome!

Our numeracy newsletter articles aim to bridge the gap between the classroom and your home, helping you to support your child’s numeracy understanding in a fun and engaging way. Numeracy goes beyond just addition and subtraction. It’s about applying maths concepts to solve problems and make sense of the world around us. Through these newsletter articles, we hope to provide families with some helpful hints and tips to increase their numeracy skills.

In our previous article, we focussed on numeracy activities that could be done in the kitchen with cooking and shopping ideas.
With this article, as we approach the AFL finals, we are looking at numeracy ideas with a sports focus.

Watching sport at home

Probability:

  • Language: Encourage discussions and ask questions like what is the probability of your AFL team making the finals? Impossible? Certain? What data supports your answer?

Arithmetic:

  • Scoring: Practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication as players and teams score points or as they receive votes in the Brownlow Medal count.
  • Time: Calculate the remaining time in a quarter or game.
  • Statistics: Track player statistics like their score for the game, rebounds in basketball or netball, runs and wickets in cricket, or tackles in AFL.

Fractions and Percentages:

  • Goal Percentage: Calculate the percentage of goals scored by a player.
  • Free Throw / Super Shot Percentage: Determine the percentage of free throws made in basketball or Super Shots scored in netball.
  • Winning Percentage: Calculate a team’s winning percentage based on wins and losses.

Data Analysis:

  • Trends: Analyse trends in player performance over time.
  • Predictions and extrapolation: Make predictions about the final score and compare them to the actual outcome.
  • Comparisons: Compare statistics between different players or teams.

Going to the game

As well as all the Numeracy involved with watching sports at home, when you go to the games in person you can involve your children in the planning and also incorporate numeracy into your conversations when you are at the game:

Budgeting:

  • Ticket Costs: Research ticket prices for different seating sections and calculate the total cost for your family.
  • Food and Drinks: Estimate the cost of food and drinks at the ground. Create a budget and track your spending.

Getting to the ground:

  • Cost: If applicable, calculate the cost of parking or the train ticket.
  • Timetables: Use public transportation timetables or estimate driving and walking time to the ground so that you arrive in time to see the start of the game. Digital tools such as PTV Planner and Google Maps could be used to assist in the planning to arrive on time.

Remember:

These activities don’t have to be complex. Keep it fun and engaging!

As the ‘Numeracy for Families’ newsletter is a new addition to MWSC, we seek feedback from families about the current content and suggestions about new content moving forward. Please complete this short 2-minute survey if you are able: https://forms.gle/GP392C45N3Kkovxz9

Book Week at the Senior Library

Read Time: ( words)

This year the theme was “Reading is magic”. Our Library Leaders did a fantastic job preparing a range of activities to celebrate. We had some wonderful displays, a fun ‘photo booth’, an online quiz and a ‘treasure’ hunt.

The Senior Library was the place to be! Students were interacting with each other, and the books, which hopefully engenders a positive experience of the library space and its collections.

Students in Year 9 had the opportunity to hear from Mr Ron Murray, indigenous storyteller and didgeridoo player. Ron spoke about his upbringing in rural NSW and the teacher who taught him to read despite the discrimination that existed within many schools and communities at the time.

We provide many services in our libraries, from recreation to study, as well as a safe and inclusive space for all of our students.
