Science
The study of Science at Mount Waverley Secondary College provides students with a practical and hands on experience where interesting and important questions about the biological, physical and technological world can be explored and answered.
In Years 7-9, where studying Science in compulsory, students will develop an understanding of concepts related to the biological, chemical, physical, Earth and space sciences. This includes the vision that science provides of the nature of living things, of the Earth and its place in the cosmos, and of the physical and chemical processes that explain the behaviour of all material things. They will also undertake practical investigations related to these topics and will use a range of scientific enquiry methods to draw conclusions from the investigations they have completed.
In Year 10, students can choose from a number of Science electives and continue to expand their scientific knowledge in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology in order to prepare themselves fully for the studies of these subjects in VCE. There is a theoretical and practical component to each of these subjects. Students in Year 10 may also elect to study Biology or Psychology Units 1 and 2. In Years 11 and 12, students can continue on with their studies in Biology and Psychology as well as begin to study in more depth the concepts explored in Chemistry and Physics. Teachers work in teams to deliver a challenging curriculum based on the VCAA Study Designs.
